Privacy policy

Overview

LocateCongress (“we,” “us,” or “the Site”) shows public information about members of Congress from official sources. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Site and how it is used.

What we do not collect

  • We do not offer accounts, logins or registration.
  • We do not collect payment information.
  • We do not use your device's location.
  • We do not sell or rent personal information.

Find My Representative

When you search by ZIP code, the ZIP code is sent to our server and matched against Census Bureau data we store. When you search by street address, the address is sent to our server and forwarded to the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder to find its congressional district. We do not store or log the ZIP codes or addresses entered. The Census Bureau's handling of geocoder requests is described in its privacy policy.

Contact and corrections forms

When you send a message through the contact or corrections form, we store the message, the page you name and, if you give one, your email address, so we can review the message and reply. To limit abuse we store a scrambled code derived from your IP address that changes every day; we do not store the IP address itself.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the Site: pages visited, the referring site, browser and device type, and approximate region (not precise location). Google's privacy policy applies to that data. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by blocking cookies.

Advertising

The Site does not show advertising.

Hosting and infrastructure

The Site is hosted on Vercel, which logs standard request information (IP address, browser user agent, time) for security and operations under its own retention policy. Our database and image storage run on Supabase; member portraits are served from our Supabase storage.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets cookies to measure visits. The Site sets no other cookies.

Data downloads

The data downloads contain public information about members of Congress and committee meetings only.

Children

The Site is for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Your rights

If you sent us a message and want it deleted, or want to know what we hold, write to us through the contact form. Depending on where you live (for example the European Union or California), you may have further rights under data protection law.

Changes

We may update this policy. Changes are posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date.
