Terms of service

Last updated

1. Acceptance of terms

By using LocateCongress (“the Site,” “we,” “us”), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site. We may change these terms; continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms.

2. The service

The Site is a free website that shows public information about members of the U.S. Congress (schedules, committee meetings, floor schedules, roll-call votes, legislation, campaign finance totals and district data), assembled automatically from official public sources listed on the sources page.

3. Accuracy

  • Schedules change. Hearings are postponed, rescheduled or cancelled, often with little notice; the official notice linked from each item is authoritative.
  • Updates are not instant. Each source is checked on the schedule shown on the how it works page, so the Site can lag the source.
  • Official feeds can contain errors or gaps, and the Site can too. Verify anything important with the official source, and please report errors.

4. No government affiliation

The Site is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the U.S. Congress, any member of Congress, any government agency, or any party or campaign.

5. Acceptable use

You agree to use the Site only for lawful purposes. You may not:

  • use information from the Site to harass, threaten or endanger any person;
  • attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems, databases or API;
  • crawl or download from the Site in a way that degrades it for others (use the data downloads instead);
  • present the Site's data as something it is not, or remove its source attribution when republishing substantial parts of it.

6. Intellectual property

The underlying government data is in the public domain. The Site's design, code and maps are ours. You may link to any page and reuse the data; we ask that you credit LocateCongress and the original source.

7. Third-party links

The Site links to official and third-party websites. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or privacy practices.

8. Limitation of liability

The Site and its data are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of the Site or reliance on its information.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims arising from your use of the Site or your violation of these terms.

10. Availability

We aim to keep the Site available but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Data depends on government feeds, which are sometimes unavailable.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Disputes are resolved in courts of competent jurisdiction within the United States.
